Yes, my journal has been very quiet this year, but that doesn't mean nothing happened. I just wasn't up to writing for most of it.

And, for kicks, last year's answers.

Finally returning to LJ. And since a lot has happened in the past months, I thought I'd meme it up to catch everyone up.

Also, I've been on LJ eight years today. Terrifying.

book meme

Plugging along. Not much going on (job hunt = depressing; family life = ridiculous; that's basically all you need to know), so have a meme:

The book I am reading: Just started The Deed of Paksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon, which was suggested to me by [ profile] allandaros ages ago. I've only just started it, but female main character? What's not to like? :D

The book I am writing: Well, am actually actively working on the SPACE PIRATES for [ profile] stargate_summer. But if we're talking about book-that-could-one-day-be-published, that would be Danse Macabre, which currently lives in pieces in [ profile] dns_macabre. Yes, I'm finally trying to finish that series of short stories, dress them up, and take them out dancing. Comm is flocked, but if you want to read the existing stories, the new-to-the-internet stories, and the reedits, ask for an invite, and I'll add you.

The book I love most: Oh, gosh, too many. The book I love most that I've reread recently is Good Omens, which is one of my happy-place books, and one of my favorites. So funny! If I were to actually become a pro writer, I would love to write a book half as good as this one.

The last book I received as a gift: [ profile] pigsflew bought me The Ophiuchi Hotline by John Varley when he visited last month, but I have not gotten a chance to read it yet.

The last book I gave as a gift: A used copy of Earthman's Burden to Dad, to replace his copy, which is too brittle to be read. Before that, a preorder of The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, for Mom.

The nearest book on my desk: Well, kitchen table/desk, though they're actually on the chair next to it: The Green Fairy Book and Jewish Family and Life, both of which I need to put in the mail on Monday. Hooray, PaperBackSwap.

stolen from [ profile] verizonhorizon

I will post the names of all the files in my WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Choose one (1), and I will post a random line or two.

This is a random combination of original and fannish work, mostly Stargate and Star Trek XI, with a little Harry Potter, and maybe other stuff. The first four are the ones I'm actively working on, the rest I pick at when I'm inspired. There's also a few projects on my to-write list I haven't started yet, so that's a whole 'nother mess.

- Comment with "I see what you did there!"
- I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can get to know you better.
- Update your journal with the answers to the questions.
- Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions.

from [ profile] verizonhorizon:

1. If you could only eat 3 foods for the rest of your life, what would you pick?
Pasta. Chocolate. Strawberries. I don't even know.

2. What first drew you to shipping Kirk/Spock?
I watched TOS and the movies when I was little, and have been shipping K/S as long as I knew what shipping was. But I didn't get involved in this fandom until after STXI came out; for some reason that movie made me want to write in a way that TOS didn't. *shrugs*

3. What was your first fandom?
X-Files. Specifically Krycek/Mulder BDSM porn. Don't judge me.

4. Have you ever been in love?
Yes, actually. And got my heart broken, squashed, and then stepped on a few times for good measure. And yes, I'm still not over it.

5. What do you enjoy about writing?
I love being able to take stories from my head and show them to other people. I love being able to fill in the gaps that I see in canon, and I love creating new worlds and characters, too. I love when a story starts beating against the inside of my head, begging to be put on the page. I love challenging myself, whether it's writing in a different style or fandom or tense. Writing is awesome. :D

Did a revamp of my icons, so let's have a meme, shall we?

Pick five of my icons, which can be found here. I will write a sentence or two about why I picked each one.

Wild horse-bunnies. When a story just gets pulled right out of you. Do you get them?

Yep. Not often, but sometimes I'll get an idea (or someone will prompt me) and I'll just sit down and then surface hours later with a complete story. It's kind of cool.

Writer's block. Have you been scourged?

Ugh, yeah. It's partially mood related, but not solely. There will definitely be days when I want to write and no words come out, or I have time to write but just don't feel like it. I wish I had better coping mechanisms to work through that, because I'd really love to write just a little bit every day.

Clean up duty. Do you like editing?

I tend to edit as I go, so usually the EDITING period is just having someone else check for typos. On longer works (*cough*Kriegsspiel*cough*), I kind of want to delete the whole thing about halfway through the editing process.

The ending. Is it hard for you to find the ending?

I usually know where I'm writing to when I get started, even if it the middle is foggy. I do tend to rush the ending, especially in longer, plottier fic, but I'm slowly training myself out of that habit.

The title. Where do you get yours? Do you have yours when you start the story?

Ugh, I am so bad at titles. 99% of the time, I'm frantically rushing to find a title so I can post whatever it is, because I refuse to post things with no title at all. I usually go for single thematic or topic words, song lyrics, quotes, that sort of thing.

Plot. If you plot out your stories first, raise your hand.

LOL no. Not at all no. I tend to start with a beginning and write to the end. Or I start with a scene in the middle, write a beginning to it, and then write to the end. And then, occasionally, the fic takes a left turn at Albuquerque and I have no idea where it's going.

POV. How do you choose your POV for a scene? For a story?

Most of my stuff is relatively short, so it tends to be single POV. Stories tend to come to me with the POV and tenses pre-determined; I don't think I've ever gone "no, this isn't right" and redone one or the other. For Kriegsspiel, I based out the POV of each scene based on who the focus of that scene was, or who would make the best observer.

Challenge. Do you like them? Do they inspire you?

I love challenges. Prompt-a-thons, gift-a-thons, RemixRedux, I love it. I'm usually writing at the last minute, because I'm shit about deadlines, but I love the way writing to a prompt or a request can often be an excuse to stretch myself and try something new. Many of my most interesting fic came out of a challenge of some type.

Sex. Do you like writing sex?

Honestly? No. I know I have a rep for being a slut-tastic writer (:P), but I don't actually enjoy writing sex. I write it because it's what the plot needs, or because someone asked for it, or because--yes, I really am this shallow--I know sexy fic often gets the most feedback.

Hell, let's make this a meme.

~ For [ profile] stargate_summer, I am working on SPACE PIRATES another action/adventurey thing, with a J/D first time subplot. SG-1 is trapped in a solar system without an active 'gate, and must follow clues in the folklore of the system's planet-hopping pirates if they want to find the 'gate and get home. Plus, there's swashbuckling, Sam in drag, and Teal'c being the BAMF we know he is. :D

~ In May, [ profile] jd_ficathon will be launching a short and sweet prompt-a-thon. Keep an eye out for it.

~ I am still working on the final two stories of Acta Est Fabula, but I have to be in a certain mood for that, since it's dark and sad and makes me cry.

~ I still intend to finish An Apple a Day, but since my brother's gone away to college, I don't watch cartoons anymore. If I thought anyone would actually read it, I'd do some research and finish the damned thing.

~ I have about 430 words of a "Meridian"-fixit based on Tam Lin (I have an unnatural affection for that story), but I'm not entirely sure how to get from the scene I wrote to the climax of the plot, so I'm ignoring that one.

~ Also have about 500 words of a [ profile] jd_ficathon fic that I started and then changed directions, which plays on the idea that Daniel gained weight while he was trapped on Tegalus. I think all it needs is some sex, but I haven't looked at it in a while.

~ Then there's "Shape of His Heart", the poker player AU, which I can't write until I a) learn how to play poker and b) learn how to cheat at poker.

~ And then, of course, there is the Jealous of Your Cigarette novel-length sequel that my muse has been clamoring for that I have no idea how to go about writing.

There's some other stuff, too, but nothing I'm likely to work on anytime soon.

Observations: I seem to be shifting toward longer fic, at least in the Stargate fandom. Most of my existing fic is less than 5,000 words; almost everything on this list is either going to be novel or novella length, or standalone-ish chapters of larger works. Hmm.

lifted from [ profile] sidlj: Each Sunday, post about six sentences from a writing project -- published, submitted, in progress, for your cat -- whatever.

“Mister O’Neill, begin docking procedures.”

“Aye, Captain,” Jack said, hands flying over the console with the ease of practice, notifying the Tertia spaceport that the Wild Goose would be coming in for a landing. He transmitted their registration and manifest without thinking about it, already focused on what he would do when they were planetside. Once the cargo was unloaded, he’d meet up with Daniel, Carter, and T; they’d get a room at one of the taverns that dotted the ship district, and then they’d enjoy the comforts of being dirt-bound for a few days: fresh food, drinkable beer, non-recycled air, different company. Spending weeks at a time in a flying tin can got really old, really fast.

You know how sometimes people on your friends list post about stuff going on in their lives, and all of a sudden you think "Wait a minute! Since when were they working THERE? Since when were they dating THAT PERSON? Since when?" And then you wonder how you could have missed all that seemingly pretty standard information, but somehow you feel too ashamed to ask for clarification because it seems like info you should already know? It happens to all of us sometimes.

Please copy the topics below, erase my answers and put yours in their place, and then post it in your journal! [Ed.: only if you want to.] Please elaborate on the questions that would benefit from elaboration. One-word answers seldom help anyone out.

This is Trip. Trip cannot keep it in his pants. Trip gets knocked up in the fifth episode of Star Trek: Enterprise. He's really bad at not touching things. :D (And considering that I've written mpreg at least twice now, I needed an mpreg icon.)

"England is a conspiracy of cartographers" is a quote from Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, one of my favorite plays. And I'm a total Anglophile, so it's only appropriate.
