double double toil and trouble

I have a pot of blood-colored liquid burbling along to itself on the stove, complete with strange noises and odd smells. *gleeful cackle*

(No, it's actually boiling beets, for making beet salad, but just because I'm out of eye of newt doesn't mean I can't pretend.)

No, I doubt that recipe would work for me. Bleu cheese is a bit much for my taste buds, although I've enjoyed it in very small quantities melted into a pasta dish. I will definitely try fresh beets when I decide to give them a go... probably what I had as a kid came out of a can or jar, and I'm no fan of pickled anything. That right there could be the reason I've assumed for years that beets are nasty!

I am encouraged. :-)
