Six Days Behind
But I'm catching up, slowly but slowly. Having to go to bed before midnight makes things difficult, but I really want to be caught up before classes start, or else I'll never finish.
Speaking of classes, I have a meeting on Monday morning with an advisor to figure out what courses I actually have to retake. I know I have to retake 112, but that might be the only one. It would certainly make life easier. *prays* Will post schedul for the spring as soon as it's definite.
I know
kashmir_ki_kali has already seen this, but go look at the mascots for the Beijing Olympics, especially the Tibetan one. Politics, much? (Though they do look cuddly. Cuddly communists? Hmm.)
Also, for the Harry Potter fans, the Harry Potter Worst Case Scenario Handbook. Make sure to put down any drinks and sit down before reading.
And, for
allandaros and others, an analysis of Battlestar Galactica and sci-fi on television from The New Yorker. Worth the read, even if you disagree.
allandaros, I'd love to know what you think.
Step 1: Put your music player on random.
Step 2: Pick your favorite line from the first 25 songs that play (skip anything that doesn’t have lyrics, or would be too obvious).
Step 3: Post and let everyone you know guess what song the lines come from.
Step 4: Cross songs out when guessed correctly.
(Also, if you need a hint, let me know, and I'll post a more obvious line)

Actually, I'd been asking about the article. I've seen bits of the show, and I don't like it so much. I really don't like the funky things they do with the camera angles, and the philosophic nature of it gets a little bit grating. But that's just me.

I think what the article is groping towards is the split between "high SF" and "low SF," which map fairly well to high fantasy and low fantasy. High fantasy is your LOTR and Beowulf, low fantasy is your Fafhrd and Grey Mouser, your Thieves' World.
It's definitely possible to map these distinctions to SF, looking at your traditional space opera and the darker, grimmer views of Whedon, Moore, and the latest set of hard-SF writers.
(Note that hard SF will probably have a tendency to fall into "low SF" rather than high, though this is not absolute - i.e. Dune and the Known Space stories).
Seemed to me that the only part of the article I might take exception to is the bit about the bumpy foreheads. Only reason I object is because Trek finally had a rational explanation for why all the species were humanoid (in The Chase from TNG).
