Beckett's Endgame is the most exquisite piece of literary torture every created. Reading it does not get across the full extent of this truth. Reading it is just suffering. Seeing it performed, you get some pleasure- and the pleasure you take out of it makes you feel even worse. I mean this literally. Every time you laugh during a performance of Endgame, it makes you realize just how bad a person you are. Contrast that to the experience of reading it, where you don't laugh, you just repeatedly say "Why am I wasting my life reading this?"
There is something remarkable about just how un-enjoyable it is.
