Ok, I just sat down and tried to watch the SGU pilot and I just...no. Can't do it. I only got 15 minutes in, but it's so bad. The stereotyping and then pompous photography style and the mustache-twirling bad guy smirk. No fucking way.

Those of you who watched it, should I keep going? I trust you all to be honest. Spoilers are fine.

I am very, very glad I decided to get new betas. I already have editing suggestions for Cam's voice, foreshadowing, and typo check for Act I, and I'm just about to send them Act II (and a revised Act I as appropriate). We're actually going somewhere!

I've got an entourage now, though. :P

Also, I tried to work on Act III while my mom was meeting with her new landlady, but instead I wound up advising on their interior design. People are weird when you tell them you've built sets.

This made my day:

Also, a bit of amusement from work yesterday: I had one of the costume designers from Round House Theatre come in to buy a sweater vest for their production of The Picture of Dorian Gray. It's apparently a modern retelling, and now I want to see it even more, if only to sit there and say "I sold them that vest!" I'm such a dork.

Feel free to ignore the previous tl;dr post about SGC organization unless it amuses you. I think I've solved my problem by coming at it from a different angle:

Assume that only trusted individuals would be taken through the 'gate come escape time (I suspect that Jack's Leave No Man Behind could be trumped by Protect the Ones You Take). Assume that trusted individuals include Gate Teams (hazing of new members could include testing them out to make sure they're on the level, especially after Makepeace) and civilian scientific consultants.

Assume that, to save money, the civilian scientific consultants are a mix of permanent employees (ex. Daniel Jackson, Bill Lee) and contractors; there is plenty of precedent for the US government and military hiring civilian contractors on a temporary basis to complete certain tasks (ex. librarians at the medical library at Walter Reed, Blackwater, what-have-you) that would take only a certain amount of time to complete. So, the SGC has a few permanent employees in each of the necessary scientific fields (anthropology, archeology, linguistics, physics, astrophysics, botany, zoology, engineering, tell me if you think I'm missing things) and then they hire contractors if they need to, say, translate a tablet from Finnish to English, and snag someone military if they need them to do it while under fire.

So, this cuts the number of people the need to potentially take with them from hundreds (possibly thousands, if there's as much military on the base as Dad thinks) to the eight 'gate teams that don't get deployed, 2-3 dozen civilian scientists, and a handful of trusted medical folks. Perfectly sensible, and it means I don't have to do nearly as much character juggling as I'd been dreading.

Now, to actually get some writing done. :P I wrote about 100 words of porn on the train yesterday, so I have to type that up, and then I need to get cracking on the last half-dozen scenes in Act I and working out the actual plot for Act II. *sigh* My work is never done.
melayneseahawk: (headdesk)
With yesterday's writing binge, I've pretty much outlined out what I still need to write for Act I. Two of the scenes are fight scenes, which is something I've never really written before. I have a sex scene to complete, and possibly another to write, depending on my mood. There's going to be at least one scene where Daniel gets to yell at people :D. I've got a few scenes where I know what has to happen, but I'm not sure how to do it; I've actually poked the amazing folks at [livejournal.com profile] military_beta about one of them. I feel confident enough with how Act I is going to start seriously outlining Act II.

But before I do, I need to get a better sense of how many people I'd actually be working with here. Meta! )

So, anyone have any ideas? I have no idea how an actual military base would work, so this is all a blend of potentially-faulty TV knowledge, data from Stargate SG-1 Solutions, and pure conjecture.

We're getting close to that time of year again, but with all the other ficathons this year (especially [livejournal.com profile] stargate_summer), I wanted to gauge people's interest. Please pimp this around; if there are enough people interested in participating, we'll have another go this year!

You can find the poll here.

(X-posted; sorry if you see this a few times.)

Finished the [livejournal.com profile] fandom_grammar first draft. I'll take another look over it and then post it to the editing comm tomorrow. Yay me, actually getting something done before deadline.

I've also washed about half of the nice dishes that we're going to need for the seder on Wednesday night. I'll be loading the rest into the dishwasher after the current load is finished the air dry part of the cycle. I've also taken out the trash, though I'll have to remember to bring the cans back in tomorrow.

The last of the dirty laundry (minus the clothes I'm currently wearing) is in the wash right now, though I've got about four loads to fold. I'll probably let that wait until tomorrow, when I can find something on TV to watch. Mum doesn't even have a DVD player in her bedroom, and I don't think I have the cables necessary to hook my laptop up to the TV.

Tomorrow I've got bathrooms to wash, plus the tub in the non-ensuite bathroom needs to be washed. I need to wash the kitchen floor, too, but I'm probably going to wait to do that until after Dad and I do the Pesach cooking on Tuesday.

I also have to write: A's reference and time writing fiction of some sort. I'd prefer my [livejournal.com profile] stargate_summer, since it's the one with a deadline, but I'll take anything right now.

(Plus, I have to pop an extra Xanax and see if I can fill out any of the retroactive leave and short-term disability paperwork for that leave I took in January. I may not work for the Company anymore, but I might get some wage reimbursement for the time off, and right now I'll take any cent I can get. Even if it makes me even crazier to do it.)

It's weird. I actually want to pull an all-nighter tonight. I can get everything done without pushing it, and I can take my pills to help me sleep, but I don't want to. I think that's a bad thing.

Apropos of something other than my lack of sanity, take a look at this week's Sunday Sweets over at Cake Wrecks. Stargate cakes! Hee.

I'm currently downloading The Lost Treasure of the Grand Canyon, and I just looked at the character names...Last names Jordan and Langford? O.O

Without even seeing the movie, I'm connecting it to Stargate canon. Halp!

Back from DragonCon. Too tired to really be coherent now, but I'll be putting up an overview of it (and Philly) tomorrow. Pictures will follow later this week.

And now, to buzz around a bit before I completely crash. Eleven-hour drives do that to a person.
