So, I've officially turned into the kind of person who is supposed to take a Xanax and calm down. I've actually been using Xanax for a couple of weeks already, as-needed to deal with days when the anxiety is particularly bad, or when I know I have to do something that's going to give me trouble. Yesterday, the doc switched me from the extended release formula (originally, I was supposed to be taking the Xanax every day, but I didn't like the groggy feeling it gave me) to the regular one and I'm supposed to use it as a sleep aid: take it before bed to shut up the anxiety loop my brain gets into so I can fall asleep faster. Took it at 11 last night, went to bed at midnight without the brain chatter (it was lovely), but then I woke up at 3-4am (about when the meds would have worn off) and had trouble falling back to sleep. I let myself sleep a little later to compensate (since I'm not really time-sensitive today) and called the doc to give him the heads up. I've no way of knowing if it was just my brain being dumb or if it was the meds, but I'm going to try again tonight and if it happens again tonight we'll need to reevaluate.

(We also haven't really dealt with the problem of the hormone-induced CRAZY I get right before my period, but I think we're focusing on getting me through the day-to-day first. I'm hesitantly optimistic, since the last few weeks have been pretty good, actually, but we'll see how it goes.)

Today is going to be a spammy day, I suspect. Be warned!

My social life is a very strange thing.

Sometimes I'll go days or even weeks without seeing anyone other than the people I live with and the people I work with. And then I'll have a chunk of time when I'm out constantly (by my standards).

Example: Friday N and I went out for Italian food and then went back to her place and played two EPIC games of Scrabble (one with her roommate). Saturday I went to see Coraline with the fam (good, but I thought the 3D was unnecessary). Sunday was the store meeting (summary: I'm taking a paycut, corporate is crazy, and Boss still expects me to do management-level duties even though I was demoted), which doesn't count as social, per se, I know. Yesterday I spent the day running around like a crazy thing (home to Dupont Circle for shrink appointment, Dupont to College Park to hand in the budget, CP to Silver Spring for therapy) and then I met Dad for coffee.

And tonight A is dragging me to the last Ladies' Night at a gay leather bar in DC.

Um...

So, the Monologues got an e-mail about possibly performing at Maryland Day, an event on campus aimed at advertising campus programs, clubs, departments, etc. to local schools, parents of students, alumni, the works. A and I responded saying that we'd love to perform. We got this in response:

stupidity and bending of the truth, I'll cut to the important part )While we value your organization and you mission, the Stamp unfortunately cannot offer you a performance space at Maryland Day.

Please let me know if you have further questions.

I just started to laugh, and then I called A, who started ranting at me about censorship and bigotry and "how dare they!" and "we should!"; basically all the things I'd been thinking, but louder. We've decided to fight the decision, of course. We're going to send an e-mail, of which this is the first draft:

We were already aware that Maryland Day is a family-friendly event, and had been planning on selecting a set of monologues that were not too extreme in their content or language. However, we think that as an activist student organization, especially one whose beneficiary is a campus program (SARPP at the Health Center), we think it is our right and responsibility to perform, raise awareness, and collect donations whenever we can.

We would be perfectly happy to send your office a copy of the exact script we intend to present so that you know what to expect. We do not, however, believe that it is fair or reasonable for us to be unequivocally denied the chance to present at a University event.

Then, if they still say no, we're going to put the word in the appropriate ears (Women's Studies Department, Pride Alliance, etc.) and watch the fireworks.

Mom's told me not to get myself arrested.
