1. A piratey song: “Black Freighter” – Steeleye Span
And the ship, the Black Freighter,
With fifty long cannons,
Opens fire on the town.

[Amusingly, this is a Brecht song, and it's Brecht who is currently making my life hell in both play analysis and design.]

2. A song for an unexpectedly rainy morning: “Rain on the Roof” – Lovin’ Spoonful
You and me were gabbin' away,
Dreamy conversation, sittin' in the hay.
Honey, how long was I laughing in the rain with you?
'Cause I didn't feel a drop 'til the thunder brought us to.

3. A song that would fit in on Sesame Street: “The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin’ Groovy)” – Simon & Garfunkel
Hello lamppost,
Whatcha knowing?
I've come to watch your flowers growing.
Ain'tcha got no rhymes for me?
Doot-duh doo-doo,
Feelin' groovy.

4. A peppermint sort of song: “That’s When I Love You” – Aslyn
And when you're mad 'cause you lost the game,
Forget I'm waiting in the rain,
Baby, I love you,
I love you, anyway.

[Sharp but sweet? Maybe? No? Oh, well.]

5. A song for mowing the lawn: “Tangled and Wild” – Oh, Susanna
I have lived in this city
Nearly all of my life.
But in my heart there's a country
That is tangled and wild.

[It made sense at the time...Maybe it's just because I don't like yardwork.]

6. A song that has the letter V in the title: “Like a River” – Kasey Chambers
I think the sun is finally rising.
It's burning down because I miss you.
I'm gonna walk right through the fire,
Cos all I wanna do is kiss you.

7. A song about he done me wrong: “The Man That Got Away” – Linda Eder
The man that won you
Has run off and undone you.
That great beginning
Has seen a final inning.

8. A song for when the network is down: “Don’t Ask Me Why” – Linda Eder
I get all wet
Each time I surf the net.
Yet, Baby, don't ask me why.

9. A song about anatomy: “Red Right Ankle” – The Decemberists
This is the story of your red right ankle,
And how it came to meet your leg,
And how the muscle, bone, and sinews tangled,
And how the skin was softly shed.

10. A song that mentions butterflies: “Ode to a Butterfly” – Nickel Creek

11. A song to vogue to that isn't actually “Vogue”: “Hot Hot Hot” – Buster Poindexter
How you feeling? (Hot hot hot)
How you feeling? (Hot hot hot)

12. A song for a car chase: “On the Road Again” – Tom Rush
On the road again (on the road again).
And can't stop more than just a few minutes,
Babe, to make love to you.

13. A song that calls for w00t: “When I Was a Boy” – Dar Williams
See that picture?
That was me:
Grass-stained shirt
And dusty knees.

14. A song for saving the world: “Rhymes and Reasons” – John Denver
And you wonder where were going.
Where's the rhyme and where's the reason.
And its you who cannot accept,
It is here we must begin.
