Also, you don't have to do 50K. You can make a smaller goal, or just do what you do.

That's what I did my first Nano. I'm slowly evolving and may eventually write a novel, but at least now I'm planning 2 semi-vaguely-related short stories!

I don't see why it even has to be limited to fiction! I think any 50,000 words you write, whether for academia or employment or pleasure should count. Frankly, I would be surprised if I do not write 50,000 words of non-personal-communication in November, though it'd be incredibly hard to add up word counts of work emails and memos and spreadsheets and code and and and...
