So, studying for astronomy final (at noon, kill me now), and I had a thought:

All semester, I've been amusing myself by picking apart episodes of my various sci-fi shows with my new knowledge of astronomy (yes, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing), and I'm debating writing up a post (or series of posts) about what they did wrong. I'd start, with black holes, and then maybe go on from there, but the issue is this: would anyone actually be interested?

I'd mostly be bashing Stargate and Atlantis, but there's definitely an episode of (new) Doctor Who that I'd take a crack at.

So, 'gaters, interested?

Interested, as long as it's not just Stargate.

Stargate comes to mind first, since I know it best, but if you point me toward other phenomena being abused I'll take a crack at them.

Well, there's this little ship we like to call the Enterprise. Her captain's a bit of a jerk (and has a toupee), but the rest of the crew is cool...

:P

(You abandoned them for that spacestation of yours, so don't get haughty now.)

But seriously, how often are stellar phenomena main plot points in any of the Trek derivatives? Or the bastard child, Enterprise? I think not.

Haughty? I have been bashing Kirk since 1991, thank you.

And I don't know about major plot points, but I can recall some stellar phenomenon being the ship-destroying factor in the second Moriarty episode of TNG. The heart of the episode was of course Moriarty and the holodeck, but the point still stands. Let's see, what else? *pulls out Trek summary magazine to provide inspiration*

Taking ships ridiculously close to suns has been a favorite pastime of starship captains. The two episodes that come to mind are Redemption Part 2 and Descent Part 2.

The problem there is that I don't really know enough to be able to refute that. But I can, for example, go on about the misused properties of black holes in multiple Stargate episodes.

I adore SG-1 nitpicking, you know. I think this is a great idea and I'm sure there are other gaters who would be interested. Isn't there a science_beta comm or something? This is the kind of info they'd love (if that exists and I didn't just make it up).

Firefly doesn't use much sci-fi spacey elements, so that probably wouldn't be a good victim, but Doctor Who could totally suffer your knowledgeable wrath. I'm having trouble coming up with other sci-fi shows, though.

Yeah, it would be awesome to find somewhere to cross-post to.

That was my problem, too; not many shows use stellar phenomena as plot devices (see comment tree above).

I think Star Trek does somewhat.

BSG has some with the search for Earth, but it's very brief and I'm not sure it really fits.

BSG dies in blood. It will never again be mentioned in this journal. Rawr.

Clearly we've got to discuss this at some point.

But not here. My journal's been sullied enough.

(I refer only to the new series, yanno. Dunno your opinion of the old one.)

Right, I meant off-journal, since you didn't seem to be interested in continuing here.

And yeah, I figured we were both talking about new BSG, not the old one - which was preeeety awful. :)
