Am trying to finish my second [livejournal.com profile] stargate_summer Big Bang this year. You know, the one where SG-1 goes undercover as space pirates. And I'm looking for an alpha reader/cheerleader to help me with some plotting issues, and whatever problems may arise as I continue working on the rough draft.

Note: cheerleader would not be required to do any actual editing; I'm going to have someone else to do that. All I'm looking for is someone familiar with SG-1 canon who is willing to hold my hand through the writing process. I've got the broadest strokes of an outline, but some of the details are eluding me, and I'm sure I'll run into additional problems as I go.

Help Needed

melayneseahawk: (let's go again)
(Damn LJ Mobile ate this post before. Let's try it again from a real computer.)

I am in desperate need of an alpha reader for a piece of Star Trek Reboot fic I'm working on for [livejournal.com profile] trekreversebang. I know what my basic plot is going to be, and I've got 2k words on the page, but I need help with transitions and making the emotional undercurrents subtle enough.

You don't need to know anything about canon except a basic grasp of the main characters. It's an AU, with an Andromeda-like android that is part of the Enterprise's systems. The fic will be low-rated Kirk/android!Enterprise, unrequited Spock/Kirk, so I can't just ask the usual suspects at [livejournal.com profile] kirkspock.

Help? Please? E-mail me or comment if you think you can help. melayneseahawk[at]gmail[dot]com

But, I finished two scenes that were in-progress, so that's nice. But, I have an question for the technology-minded people:

I need a way to send a transmission from Earth to somewhere out in the galaxy in a way that will make it impossible to track. Yes, this is very scifi, so it can be possible tech, or stolen from a tv show, or whatever, but since I've got tech-minded people narrating sometimes, I need technobabble terminology I can throw around.

For you Stargate folks, I was thinking the Asgard tech on the Odyssey might help, but do you know if there's anything we've seen the Asgard use that might help?

Thanks!

So, the problem with deciding to have a character get pregnant in a story that lasts many months? At some point, she has to actually have the baby. Gah.

I don't know how to write someone giving birth, from any perspective.

I'm pretty sure I can't just say "oh, she had the baby!" at some point.

And then, of course, this leaves me with the fact that I have a baby on a secret military base hidden on an alien planet.

*headdesk repeatedly*

Any thoughts? Anyone? Bueller?

melayneseahawk: (deadline screwed)
So, as most of you probably know, I'm writing a novel for [livejournal.com profile] stargate_summer, the first ever Stargate Big Bang (a ficathon wherein a complete novel is written and presented to the fandom). My rough draft deadline is July 31st. And I am...a bit of a spaz.

As some of you probably know, I have a cheerleader/alpha-reader, who's responsible for catering to my whims letting me bounce ideas off of her and reads bits of my draft to tell me if they suck or if they make no sense (certain amount of that going on) and helps me organize my thoughts so I can then put them on the page. However, [livejournal.com profile] indywind, my alpha, has some exciting RL stuff going on, so can't answer my daily e-mails as quickly as my spaz requires. (I love you, [livejournal.com profile] indywind! You are so awesome.)

So, what I really need is an alpha-prime, someone else I can bombard with questions and freakouts, just until the rough draft is due; then, my beta/editor takes over and she can deal with me. :D Happily, you would not need to be familiar with Stargate canon to assist. The novel takes off from the end of Stargate Atlantis, and the very little you would need to know about canon is either already in the novel, or I an give you a basic crash course beforehand. I'm not concerned about characterization or canon accuracy, just coherence within my project.

Again, I'd only need your help through the end of July, though I would probably be sending you e-mails every day. And, you'll be able to say that you helped me finish my first novel ever, so that's kind of cool.

So, any takers? My e-mail is melayneseahawk[at]gmail[dot]com; drop me a line if you want to help, or you want more info, or whatever.

Thanks!

The new hard drive arrived: 500 GB...and it's just a drive. No case, no cables.

What the hell do I do with it now?

*cries*

ETA: What I bought was a refurbished this (thank god for the internet, I was able to track it to the manufacture's website). If I'm reading it right, it can be used for external storage, which is what I want it for. But Seagate doesn't seem to sell casings, that I can find. *headdesk*

So, I'd mentioned this before, I think, but I'm doing the Hemophilia Association of the Capital Area's Blood, Sweat, and Gears Ride this coming Saturday. I'll be riding 25km (about 15 miles) to raise money for hemophilia research.

I've already taken care of my entrance fee thing, but I'd been hoping to raise some money to donate. It's hella last minute, but I never quite managed to figure out how to do this with Paypal, which I thought would be the easiest way (I need to bring my donations to the ride).

If you want to donate, I see three ways of doing this: First, I think the way to do it via PayPal is to go here, but I'm not entirely sure; if it works and you need my e-mail address, comment and I can send it to you. Second, you could send me a check (comment and I'll send you the info), and I'll spot you for the time being. Third--and this is if you know you'll be seeing me sometime in the not too distant future--you can comment with an amount and I can spot you until we see each other again.

Don't feel bad if you don't donate; I'm not trying to milk you guys or anything. And every little bit helps. I just don't want to show up empty-handed.

(And if you do decide to donate, comment so I can put you down as a sponsor.)

I'm going to screen comments so that if real names come up no one has to worry.

Two questions for those of you who aren't just pretending to be technologically-inclined:

First, I want to buy another external hard drive. At least 300+ gigs, already in casing, for no more than $100 if possible. Where should I be looking? (I bought Midget from TigerDirect and did not have a great experience with them.)

Second, I'm doing a bike ride to raise money for hemophilia research, and I was going to pester people for donations, but I've got no idea how to gather the money into one place from anyone who might want to donate who're out of town. I was thinking PayPal, maybe, and then I could write a check from my account for the lot of it, but can I work it that way? Help?

Yeah, I fail at geek.

(Oh, and I'm hard at work at the prompts. If you still want to prompt me, I'm collecting them here.)

I need someone to help me create a banner for the J/D Ficathon. I've already got something in mind, and it's a simple manip (taking the background out of an existing pic, maybe blurring the figures a bit), but Photoshop and I are only barely acquainted. Let me know in comments if you're interested in helping, or you know someone who might be willing and able to do the same.

You guys are awesome.
